Artist Statement

Maria Lago is an artist who resides in Mamaroneck,NY.  She can be contacted at 914-698-4660 or through her website www.marialago.com.  Artist statement: I usually employ primitive symbols and archetypal images in my work to deal with a variety of contemporary issues. These symbols often have a mythological relationship. The symbols allow me to explore the universal condition and interpret my personal experience within a common communal visual code. My own images emerge from this collective unconscious organically. To me painting is more a possession than a representation.   I use a variety of material, such as, cement, plaster, glues, sand, shells, string, pepples, and old discarded, pieces of wood, to make my paintings. I usually start by making a thick paste from these various materials, which I apply liberally over the working space. From there, I usually slash, scratch and forge some basic shapes and symbols. I try to go beneath the surface and let the material evolve into its own unique form. I work with the thickness of the mix to simulate the beauty and textures of earth and sea.   The material has become essential to me in my work, and I am continually exploring different mediums. I have created clay sculpture and collage and enjoy printmaking, etching, and engraving. I am constantly working to mix and match different materials to achieve new and different effects. To me, each medium is like a separate language which can be combined, and from which new languages can emerge.   Most recently I have been doing a lot of printmaking, etching, and engraving, am currently showing my work on paper in New York and Spain.
