Artist Statement

Dena Schutzer - Local Encounters  Bowery Gallery, 530 W. 25th st., NYC  March 28-April 18, 2015 Dena Schutzer’s second solo exhibition at the Bowery presents a collection of oil paintings keenly alert to specific moments in the life of the city. Working from direct observation and photographs, the artist vividly captures the rhythmic poses of workers relaxing in their trucks, and a woman’s ‘puffer’ down jacket echoing a column’s architectural form. While faithfully painting what she sees, the artist shifts her stance as needed to preserve a first vital impression, working, as she puts it, “between compositional geometry and the humanity of the subject.”
