Artist Statement

Nature has always been a core motivator of my work. I continue to photograph those relationships and structures that appeal to my inner sympathies. For the last several years, I have been working with scavenged, storm felled trees and branches reconfiguring them into discrete objects and installations. Recently, I decided to work on a more intimate scale. Surrounded in the studio by a plethora of photographs and branches, I began to combine the two elements and play with issues of space, reality and illusion. The tree images are inkjet prints mounted on archival board with a wood frame. The branches are trimmed of bark, sanded, colored with acrylic paint and adhered to the surface. The combined elements may trouble the process of “reading” on the part of the viewer. They may intervene with what they reference but do not necessarily explain. For me, they reconnect old and new thoughts and perspectives about nature, art and everything in between.
