I am an Artist inspired by Africa!
Botswana and Zimbabwe were my home for several years and I return to Africa regularly to sketch, visit conservation organizations and lead Art Safaris for Africa Geographic.
Field sketching is a vital part of my work and the best way I know to improve my artistic skills. I sketch people and animals in pencil and watercolor, so I have to work quickly and confidently. My Conservation Sketching Expeditions program allows me to visit conservation organizations in the field and sketch on site while learning about their work and the issues they face on a daily basis. My 1st expedition was an Artists For Conservation Flag Expedition during which I spent 6 weeks with Painted Dog Conservation in Zimbabwe, tracking and sketching highly endangered African wild dogs (also known as painted dogs). My 2nd expedition involved 3 visits to the African People & Wildlife Fund in Tanzania, where I sketched among the mostly Maasai community.
My studio paintings are acrylic on canvas and are based on my field sketches or visual memories. I use loose washes of color to both obscure and reveal the subject of the painting, and to create effects of light, heat and dust. Space has become an important element in my work, largely as a result of spending time under the huge skies of the Kalahari and Namib deserts.
I am a signature member of Artists For Conservation and the Society of Animal Artists, and a member of the Salmagundi Club and Explorers Club. I make a donation to African conservation from the sale of every original painting, original field sketch and limited edition reproduction.
