Last spring, the Jefferson Valley Mall and artist Sharon Rubinstein struck an unusual deal; Sharon would embark upon a portrait commission for the shopping center, and they would provide her ample square footage at an attractive rent to locate her studio-gallery. The arrangement has been a smashing success. The fourteen 18 x 24” oil portraits will be exhibited on January 27 at the “Your Corner Artist” gallery and studio, which will soon be vacating this particular space. They will then be displayed on a rotating basis near the mall offices, off the food court.

“I am so grateful to the Mall for providing me this wonderful opportunity to capture and record some of the people and activities that animate the mall,” Rubinstein said. “It’s a real community, and I’ve loved being part of it, and showcasing it.”

Among the subjects: a 96-year-old WWII veteran who frequents the mall; an avid table-tennis player who picks up a paddle nearly every day; vendors; and children participating in special events. Many of the models will appear at the opening.

Sharon specializes in portraiture, but enjoys a range of artistic subjects and media. She studied fine art at Cornell University, the University of Michigan, and Virginia’s Art Students League, and with noted artists Daniel Greene and Robert Liberace.
