River’s Edge Theatre Company Presents Eco-Friendly

Homegrown Shakespeare – A Midsummer Night’s Dream

[Ossining, NY] – River’s Edge Theatre Company is thrilled to announce its highly anticipated eco-friendly production, Homegrown Shakespeare: A Midsummer Night’s Dream, set to enchant audiences July 20th and 21st at Bethany Arts Community in Ossining. This unconventional, sustainable approach to Shakespeare promises to be a captivating blend of whimsy, romance, and humor.

What makes this production “homegrown”? Earth conscious actors agree to participate in a theatrical feat for the planet. Forbidden to rehearse with one another, each actor must craft their own character, costume, and props in the privacy of their own home with sustainability in mind. Nothing can be purchased. Use of recycled materials is encouraged. Coming together for the first time on the weekend of the show, these actors perform onstage in front of a live audience.

Director Jessica Irons, known for her innovative and accessible direction of productions at Theater O and River’s Edge (Ichabod, Every Brilliant Thing, The Parking Lot) will be loosely staging the play during the cast’s one and only tech rehearsal.

This unconventional production is part of River’s Edge Theatre Company’s mission to inspire social change. The performance is designed to encourage patrons to live more sustainability and take action to fight climate change. Groundwork Hudson Valley, a nonprofit organization dedicated to creating sustainable environmental change in urban neighborhoods through community based partnerships, will be partnering with River’s Edge Theatre Company for this performance. Representatives from Groundwork Hudson Valley will share resources with patrons, and 10% of the ticket sales will go to Groundworks educational programming.

This project is made possible with funds from Arts Alive, a regrant program of ArtsWestchester with support from the Office of the Governor, the New York State Legislature, and the New York State Council on the arts.
