Cocomama

The Untermyer Performing Arts Council will present Cocomama at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 5th, at Untermyer Park.
A virtual United Nations of women, the members of Cocomama hail from five countries on four continents. Playing their own kind of World Latin music, powerfully virtuosic yet elegantly musical, Cocomama creates a sound that is all at once fierce and beautiful!
Their debut album Quiero, included in the 2016 Grammy pre-nominations for Best Tropical Latin album, celebrates the coming together of a wide range of musical experiences in three different languages. As evidenced by their diverse repertoire, the group’s influences are limitless: Afro-Cuban, Classical, Jazz, Afro-Caribbean, Latin American, Soul, R&B and beyond.
Cocomama’s origins date back to 2005 when an all-female salsa band was requested to play a fundraiser at the Copacabana for then New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg. The success of this chance performance led to other engagements and Cocomama was born. Over time, the sheer diversity of the band members’ backgrounds and talents could not be ignored; today, the group’s sound is an inclusive blending of musical styles and influences from around the globe.
Enchanting audiences with their irresistible groove at New York City’s most popular jazz and Latin clubs including Studio 54, the Iridium, and Subrosa, Cocomama also has performed at the United Nations, the Brooklyn Academy of Music, Central Park, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
The Untermyer Performing Arts Council is an all-volunteer organization dedicated to continuing the tradition of Minnie and Samuel Untermyer, bringing musical entertainment to our treasure of a park and the people of Yonkers.
Although our events are admission free, our audience is limited to fifty people and reservations are mandatory. All audience members must wear masks at all times in the park and bring chairs. Seating is only in designated seating areas. To reserve a spot, call 914-375-3435 after 11 am on Tuesday, September 1st. Please leave your name, phone number and the number of reservations you need to a maximum of four on the answering machine. Reservations will be allocated in the order received. Only those with a confirmed reservation will be admitted to the park; all attendees will be temperature scanned at check in.

The Untermyer Performing Arts Council (UPAC) was formed in 1976 to promote the appreciation of the performing arts in Yonkers and beyond. UPAC’s mission was to foster and sponsor performing arts events at the historic Untermyer Park and other venues in Yonkers. UPAC is an all-volunteer, not-for-profit organization that relies on public grants and private donations. In addition to its popular free summer performance series at Untermyer Park, a new program entitled “UPAC on the Road” was recently launched, with support from Arts Westchester to reach new communities and partner with a variety of neighborhoods, businesses and community organizations.
Now celebrating its 39th year, UPAC continues to grow and seek new ways to serve the residents of Yonkers and the surrounding region. The motto of the Untermyer Performing Arts Council can be summed up with three “E’s”…enlighten, educate and entertain.
