KinoSaito Presents Kikuo Saito and Friends Exhibition, Artists in Residence Open Studios, and Opening Reception on Saturday, May 13, from 4-7 pm

Verplanck, NY (April 20, 2023) KinoSaito is pleased to present the exhibition, Kikuo Saito and Friends: New York City Downtown and Beyond, 1970s and 1980s, an Artists in Residence Open Studios event with Mary Mattingly and Leticia Pardo, and an Opening Reception on Saturday, May 13, from 4-7 pm. Spanning across all three art center galleries, this show, curated by renowned critic Karen Wilkin, will be on view until December 18. It features work by Saito alongside pieces by the prestigious artists who were his friends and colleagues for over 20 years. These free-admission events will take place at KinoSaito’s historic St. Patrick’s Catholic School at 115 7th Street, Verplanck, NY.

In conjunction with this unique display of iconic contemporary artists’ works, KinoSaito has created a full-color exhibition catalogue with an introductory essay by Wilkin and reminiscences of Saito by his fellow artists and his first gallerist. It will be made available for purchase at KinoSaito and online at www.kinosaito.org. The catalogue and exhibition have been generously supported by the James Fuentes Gallery, Berry Campbell Gallery, Irene Ritter Foundation, Helen Frankenthaler Foundation, Kenneth Noland Foundation, Robert Wilson, and The Art Students League of New York.

The simultaneous Open Studios event will give exhibition attendees a rare glimpse into KinoSaito’s resident artists’ works in progress and their practices. Mattingly is a sculptor and photographer whose work has been exhibited at the International Center of Photography, Brooklyn Museum, and Palais de Tokyo, among other venues. She has been the recipient of numerous awards, including the 2023 Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship Award, and grants from the James L. Knight Foundation and Jerome Foundation. Pardo is a Mexican-American multidisciplinary artist and architect whose practice lies between the boundaries of research, art, and architecture. She currently serves as the Creative Director of Exhibition Design at The Art Institute of Chicago, and she has designed exhibitions at such renowned institutions as The Detroit Institute of Arts, Museo Amparo, and Museo Universitario.
