New Rochelle Public Library Brings International Music and Dance to Its Stage

This summer, New Rochelle Public Library will kick off its 34th annual “International Music and Dance” series – a program that highlights cultural traditions from around the world. The five-event series begins with the traditions of Russia on July 11, when folk ensemble Barynya presents dances and songs with balalaika accompaniment. The group’s founder will offer explanatory narration and music. The Japanese Folk Dance Institute introduces the culture, history and spirit of Japan on July 18 through various traditional folk dances from all parts of the country. Arabian Dance by Aszmara on July 25 will be accompanied by folkloric music of Armenia, Turkey and Egypt. The stage comes to life again on August 1, when Bokandeye African Dance and Drum Troupe showcases the drumming, colorful costumes and dancing of African villages. The series closes on August 12, when Calpulli Mexican Dance Company are joined by students of the library’s Mexican dance classes. These dancers will celebrate Mexico’s diverse cultural history. All events will take place at the Ossie Davis Theater, aside from the August 12 event, which takes place in Ruby Dee Park at Library Green. For more info, visit: nrpl.org.
