“A Gathering of Light 2017” Photo Exhibit Opens at the Rye Arts Center
Rye Arts Center will present A Gathering of Light 2017, a collection of photographs from members of The Ground Glass, through December 2. The exhibition features 31 photographs from 12 local photographers and covers a wide range of subjects – from abstract architecture and portraits to family life and an exploration of cities around the world, such as the grittiness of New York City and the stillness of Belgium.
While many of the images are black and white, there are vivid color photographs as well, creating a contrast of grayness and brightness throughout the gallery.
“[The Ground Glass] is now in its forty-second year and our members are comprised of amateur and professional fine arts photographers working in a variety of formats,” according to the group’s president, Patrick J. Cicalo.
“This is the second year that we’ve exhibited at the Rye Arts Center. We usually hold one juried show a year and were very excited to have curator Robert Gurbo put this exhibit together for us.”
Gurbo is a professional photographer and curator for the Andre and Elizabeth Kertész Foundation. For the past 37 years, he has archived the 35,000+ prints that Kertész produced throughout his lifetime and has written numerous books and articles about the photographer’s body of work.
“When I judged the photographs, I chose the ones that I thought spoke to each other,” said Gurbo. “Looking at the photos collectively, they seem to be having a conversation among themselves.”
A Gathering of Light 2017 includes the work of Patrick Cicalo, Ilene Africk, Rita Baunok, Arnold Kastenbaum, Susan Lawi, Alan Model, Peter D. Nagy, Ruth Raskin, Charlie Seton, H. David Stein and Cal Swanson.
The Ground Glass holds monthly meetings at the Rye Arts Center and features guest speakers, including well-known photographers and educators. The meetings are free and open to the public. The next meeting will be held on December 13 at 7pm. For more info about The Ground Glass, visit thegroundglass.org. For more info on Rye Arts Center, visit ryeartscenter.org.
