Artist Statement

Jan Leder is a flutist, composer and lyricist who studied with Lennie Tristano while simultaneously compiling Women in Jazz: A Discography of Instrumentalists 1913-1968 (Greenwood Press 1985) as her undergraduate thesis at SUNY Purchase.  Her first CD, Passage to Freedom (Monad 1997), received excellent reviews, followed by Nonchalant (A-Records, 2000), which also received critical acclaim, substantial radio airplay and worldwide distribution.   Jan leads her own jazz ensembles at New York and Westchester area nightclubs, restaurants, public events and private parties in addition to regular performances in dozens of nursing homes, assisted living and other senior communities.  Her special work with seniors has been featured on radio and television as well as in print.  Several of Jan's songs have won Billboard awards and a handful of her compositions have been performed and recorded by other artists and included in movie and television soundtracks.  She is also a member of Art Lillard's Heavenly Big Band and the NY Jazz Flutet.
