Nutcracker Holiday Guide: Classic Versions and Creative Twists

Each December, productions of The Nutcracker take many forms, spanning full-length ballets, family-friendly adaptations, and reimagined interpretations of the classic story. This year’s offerings provide multiple entry points into the classic holiday tale, including professional companies, student ensembles, sensory-friendly performances and even a documentary.

December 7 & 14, 2025
The Nutcracker: Central Park Dance
Presented by The Capitol Theatre

Central Park Dance brings its full-length production of The Nutcracker to The Capitol Theatre, featuring a large student and professional cast, detailed costumes, and projections. The production gives Westchester families three chances to experience the classic ballet close to home. 5pm on both days, with an additional 12:30pm matinee on December 14.

The Nutcracker: Westchester Ballet Company
Presented by Westchester Ballet Company

While this production takes place in the Bronx, it is the crown jewel of Westchester Ballet Company’s season. The long-running Nutcracker performances bring a large cast of regional dancers to the stage with grand party scenes, battle sequences and snow-filled finales. The 75th annual production has become a local rite of passage for performers and audiences alike at Lehman Center for the Performing Arts. Times vary.

December 13-14 & 20-22, 2025
Nutcracker Dream
Presented by Ballet des Amériques / Emelin Theatre

Ballet des Amériques (BdA) returns to the Emelin with Nutcracker Dream, a 90-minute adaptation choreographed by BdA’s founder, Carole Alexis. Professional dancers from BdA share the stage with local students in a family-friendly production that balances Marie’s playful imagination with an elegant coming-of-age story set to Tchaikovsky’s beloved score.

The Nutcracker (New York Theatre Ballet)
Presented by Tarrytown Music Hall

New York Theatre Ballet presents a one-hour family-friendly production of The Nutcracker tailored to young audiences while retaining classical elegance. Professional dancers bring Clara’s dream world to life with crisp storytelling and choreography, offering an accessible introduction to ballet. 3pm & 6pm.

December 14, 2025
Documentary Film: The Nutcracker at Wethersfield
Presented by Bedford Playhouse

This documentary chronicles choreographer Troy Schumacher’s effort to stage an immersive production of The Nutcracker at a Hudson Valley estate in 2020 during the pandemic. The film follows New York City Ballet dancers and collaborators as they reimagine the classic during a challenging season, highlighting resilience and the importance of live performance. 12pm.

December 21, 2025
Nutcracker Short & Sweet: A Sensory-Friendly Production
Presented by Paramount Hudson Valley Theater

Paramount Hudson Valley’s Nutcracker, Short and Sweet condenses Tchaikovsky’s ballet into a one-hour, sensory-friendly performance with a local Hudson Valley cast. Narration from Clara’s point of view and adjusted sound and lighting make this family-oriented production especially welcoming for neurodiverse audiences.

December 29, 2025
Nutcracker Tap Dance Special
Presented by New Rochelle Public Library

New Rochelle Public Library presents a Nutcracker-inspired tap dance and music performance “with a jazzy twist” from musical duo Musiquita. The family-focused program incorporates tap dance, violin and piano music and encourages children aged 3-11 to sing and dance along to holiday favorites in both English and Spanish. 11am.
