St. Thomas Orchestra Rebrands as Excelsior Symphony Orchestra
St. Thomas Orchestra is getting a new name to match its fresh goals. The group has rebranded as Excelsior Symphony Orchestra, a name that, according to Music Director William Eckfeld, “better expresses [their] identity.” This is echoed in the fact that the group, along with presenting classical works, has also been instrumental in the premiere of new works.
“[Excelsior is] a name that includes our commitment to ‘excel’ and echoes the motto of our New York home state, ‘Always Upward’ says Eckfeld.
Reflecting an enhanced dedication to diverse symphonic music and educational outreach, the rebranding marks a pivotal moment under Eckfeld’s guidance. As such, the group is increasing partnerships with educational institutions and is developing a program called Diversity on the Podium, which will invite diverse voices to the forefront of classical music as guest conductors.
The St. Thomas Orchestra came from its first rehearsal space, St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Mamaroneck, with which the orchestra was never affiliated. Board Chair George Drapeau points out that while the group is still on good terms with the church, the association has caused some confusion over the years.
Its upcoming spring concert on April 21 at Sommer Center at Concordia Place
Iona Campus in Bronxville. Led by guest conductor Teresa Cheung, the performance will showcase a commitment to both traditional and contemporary repertoire.
The program includes Ferdinand David’s Concertino for Trombone and Orchestra featuring trombone soloist Doug Denniston, alongside Eckfeld’s own Xyklus 3, and concludes with Pyotr Ilych Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5, Op. 64.
