River’s Edge Theatre Company Finds Permanent Home in Hastings
River’s Edge Theatre Company (RETC)’s artistic director, Meghan Covington, says the company has spent its first number of years “hopping from location to location.” Until now, that is. The company has announced a permanent location at 546 Warburton Avenue in Hastings-on-Hudson, which Covington calls their “home base,” beginning this month.
The local nonprofit, established in 2019, has been renting space at other venues for rehearsals and performances. While the company will continue to rent space for larger productions, the new location will allow them to host intimate performances for smaller audiences.
Says Covington: “Not only will it allow us to expand our programming, but it will save us a lot of time and energy. Instead of searching for spaces, we can use that time to create more theatre.” As such, the company also plans to expand their educational programming to include playwriting, improv, clowning, pantomime, and costume and stage makeup design in addition to its current offerings. A “Housewarming Weekend” on February 11-12 will feature music, refreshments and demos.
“We also hope to stage a full production of Circle Mirror Transformation by Annie Baker at some point in the future,” says Covington. “We produced a reading of this play for our inaugural performance… The entire show is set inside an acting class, so the new space would be the perfect venue.”
Beginning in March, River’s Edge will launch a play reading series called “Cold Reads.” The pay-what-you-wish performances will allow the audience an insider’s view at the playwriting process by watching an actor do a “cold reading.” That is, they will perform a play without the benefit of any previous rehearsals.
The company will release its full season schedule in the coming weeks.
