Recap: Sustainability Takes Over the Runway in White Plains

ArtsWestchester recently presented a sold-out fashion event in its White Plains gallery, featuring a runway of sustainable fashions by local students and designers. The “chic-cycling” event, co-hosted by Andy Yu, Melissa Tomlin and Nicole Steinthal, was part of ArtsWestchester’s Gallery Nite Out series, and brought out a crowd of fashion-savvy people. Guests were also treated to a piano performance by a musical prodigy who was accepted into Juilliard at age seven, as well as a DJ and bites by Red Horse by David Burke and Board Appetite.

In preparation, designer Andy Yu coached designers through their creations, from conception to construction, and brought in a panel of judges who decided against naming a winner since the fashions all inspire and support a message of sustainability. Upcycled materials used for the high-end fashions included food wrappers, shopping bags, recycled denim and more.

The eco-friendly fashion show continues ArtsWestchester’s look at sustainable fashion and fabric, as it follows on the heels of its fall 2022 Social Fabric exhibition and Metropolis Sunrise, the fabric installation that draped its building’s façade last year.

The event’s backdrop was an exhibition by photography group The Ground Glass, which remains on view through July 23.

Ticket sales benefited both ArtsWestchester and the Community Center of Northern Westchester.
