Artist Statement
My work is deeply informed by my European training, and my passion for ancient and classical art. Driven by a love of cultures, both past and present, my work suggests ideal forms as they exist in nature, the human figure and the man-made world. Through the sculptural forms I represent, there is a strong sense of layering, and of revealing images beneath the surface. My works impart a fascination with archeology as it suggests traces of previous life, and offers clues to the distant past.
Having earned an undergraduate degree from Brandeis University, and postgraduate degrees in Arts and Humanities from NYU, I pursued a combined career as an artist and an art teacher. I subsequently completed further studies in painting at the New York Academy of Art and the Art Students League. Aside from formal degree work in the U.S., I spent six years working and studying in Italy, England and Germany. I received training in sculpture at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Torino, and subsequently earned a residency in Pietrasanta at the Sem Ghelardini Marble Laboratory. I was also awarded artist residencies in photography in the Burren, Ireland and the Instituto di Santa Reparata in Florence. Upon returning to the U.S., I earned sculpture residencies at the Vermont Studio Center and the Master Workshop at Southampton College.
I have exhibited widely in the U.S., and am part of private collections in Italy, Hungary and Greece. Please visit www.sylviavigliani.com for more information.
