Artist Statement

I was born and grew up in New York City and currently live in Westchester County, New York. Formally trained as an architect, I worked in architecture and city planning for many years. I have worked in a variety of media including assemblage and wall relief, photography, painting, sculpture and watercolor. My primary interest is in the development and modulation of pattern and color. I am fascinated by the transformation that occurs when discarded or found objects become the basis for a work of art. Much of my recent work has involved the use of thin metallic surfaces treated with patinas in order to create wall reliefs. Much of my recent work makes use of both Islamic designs and quilt patterns. My work has been exhibited in museums and galleries in New York including the Whitney Museum, O.K. Harris, the Neuberger Museum of Art, Leo Castelli and Allan Stone Galleries. In addition it is in many private collections including those of Roy Neuberger, Phillip Johnson and I.M. Pei. Since 2002 I have been the Director of The Blue Door Artist Association, now Blue Door Art Center. I have organized and curated numerous exhibitions at Blue Door Gallery and at venues throughout the county. I have also been responsible for organizing a number of public art installations throughout Yonkers. Examples of my work may be seen on my website – www.luisperelman.com
