Artist Statement

Fred Greenspan has been performing live traditional puppet shows for museums, historic sites, fairs, libraries, schools and corporate special events of all kinds since 1983. He began doing puppetry while working as a museum educator.  He is a member of Puppeteers of America, Union Internationale de la Marionette, Puppetry Guild of Greater New York, Puppetry Guild of Long Island, Society of American Magicians, veteran Westchester Arts Council roster artist, and past President of the Valley Arts Association. Among Fred's repertoire are five Punch & Judy shows, an Italian rod-marionette show based on a popular scenario from the Commedia Dell Arte, and a flea circus. His new Puss 'N Boots show is designed for children ages 3 through 6 and contains lots of audience participation. Fred's aim is to entertain and expose audiences to live traditional entertainments as were common before modern electronic entertainments were available, and to promote discussion of the history of traditional entertainment.

Educational Background

Fred has a Masters Degree in Cultural Anthropology from Temple University, a B.A. in Liberal Arts from Bard College, an A.A.A.S. in Photographic Technology from SUNY Farmingdale, and is a graduate of the High School of Art & Design in New York City.
