(Chappaqua, NY ) The Art of the Quilt is a celebration of 19th, 20th, and 21st century quilts displayed in the summer residence of Horace Greeley and the home of the New Castle Historical Society.
On view are thirty-five handmade quilts, spanning three centuries, many made by local residents. From the humble beginnings of a quilt, oftentimes made from a woman’s bag of fabric scraps to the intricate work of applique and trapunto, this exhibit is a curated panorama of the many forms of quilting; representing classic patterns and motifs to ‘flights of fancy’ in creativity and ingenuity.
Highlights of the exhibit include the 1895 “Crazy Quilt” donated to the New Castle Historical Society by the descendants of the Dodge family, one of the original Quaker families to settle in Chappaqua, an “Album Quilt”, oftentimes called a “Friendship Quilt” comprised of individual blocks, created by the maker with their name embroidered within the square and a “Patriotic Quilt”, appliqued with a multitude of motifs reflecting the American Revolution up to 1903, when the quilt was made.
All proceeds benefit the NCHS, a non-profit, member supported organization.

About New Castle Historical Society
The New Castle Historical Society (NCHS) is a 501(c)3 non-profit educational organization whose mission is to discover, collect, preserve, and communicate the history of the Town of New Castle, NY. Founded in April 1966, NCHS activates its mission through community events, exhibitions, and educational programming that bring history to life in the present day. It’s collections include artworks, books, photographs, clothing, everyday objects, archival materials, and more related to New Castle history from the pre-colonial era to today. NCHS is headquartered in the historic Greeley House, the country home of Horace Greeley’s family from 1864-1872. Dating to the early 1850s, the Greeley House is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It provides a handsome example of 19th-century architecture as well as having historic significance as the former home of one of the town’s most celebrated residents. NCHS is open for visitors Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, 11am – 3pm. Group tours and research appointments can be scheduled outside these hours.
