“We’re leaning into the idea that the New Rochelle Council on the Arts is the source for everything about the arts right here at home,” says Theresa Kump Leghorn, President of the NRCA, who hosts the podcast. “The podcast is a way to connect listeners to the people making the arts happen in our community.”

For example, she says, Christopher J. Farley has written novels and biographies —  including a national bestseller, “Aaliyah: More Than A Woman,” that was adapted into a hit movie for Lifetime television — and the podcast delves into how that background informs his work at PBS. “And Marie Hines Cowan has been invited to exhibit her bold, large-scale works in Venice next spring for the European Cultural Centre’s 2024 biennial – it’s exciting to see a local artist step onto a larger stage,” says Leghorn.

Other podcast guests this season have included world famous 3-D artist Charles Fazzino, City Historian Barbara Davis discussing New Rochelle’s rich art history, painter Alvin Clayton talking about his career as a model who moved from posing to painting, artist and arts educator Alexandra Rutsch Brock, storyteller Angelea Derecas Taylor and author Amy Bass, an Emmy Award winner who is Professor of Sport Studies at Manhatanville College. The NRCA was created by the New Rochelle City Council in 1975 to stimulate and encourage the study and presentation of the performing and fine arts. For nearly five decades NRCA has worked to fulfill that mission by sponsoring art exhibitions, theatrical productions, dance recitals, film screenings, lectures, and concert series. In addition, NRCA has sponsored public art — like the popular NRNY Murals downtown — and created the Summer Sounds Concert Series and ArtsFest — while helping to build relationships between the arts, the business community and city government. NRCA promotes the local art scene through its social media and its free monthly e-newsletter. For more about NRCA visit the website www.newrochellearts.org NRCA’s programs are made possible, in part, by ArtsWestchester with funds from Westchester County Government, the City of New Rochelle, and the support of community donations.
