River’s Edge Theater Company brings you
Romeo and Juliet—with an eco-friendly spin
Ossining, NY – River’s Edge Theatre Company is proud to bring back its bold and eco-conscious Homegrown Shakespeare series for a second summer—this time with a fresh, sustainable take on Romeo and Juliet. Performances will take place July 19 and 20 at Bethany Arts Community in Ossining, NY.
What is Homegrown Shakespeare? Earth conscious actors agree to participate in a theatrical feat for the planet. Forbidden to rehearse with one another, each actor must craft their own character, costume, and props in the privacy of their own home with sustainability in mind. No purchases allowed! Use of recycled materials is encouraged. These actors then come together for the first time on the weekend of the show, and perform onstage in front of a live audience.
Why Romeo and Juliet? This timeless tale of forbidden love, family divides, and impassioned ideals resonates in today’s world where divisions run deep, and differences often lead to conflict. The story challenges us to look at the power struggles and misunderstandings of Shakespeare’s time through a modern lens, asking how we can bridge divides and make room for unity. As the young lovers defy the forces pulling them apart, we’re reminded that empathy, courage, and love have the power to break cycles of discord and inspire real change. River’s Edge Artistic Director Meghan Covington. “We’re using the stage not just to entertain, but to ignite change.”
This innovative production is part of River’s Edge Theatre Company’s mission to inspire social responsibility through the arts. Audiences will leave not only moved by Shakespeare’s words, but also motivated to live more sustainably and join the fight against climate change. To further this mission, 10% of all ticket sales will be donated to Riverkeeper, a local nonprofit dedicated to protecting the Hudson River and the communities that depend on it.
