COMPLEMENTS: Charles Addams & Suzanne Heilmann

A Whimsical and Wonderfully Unexpected Dialogue Between Two Artists

Rye, NY – The works of Charles Addams return to The Rye Arts Center in 2025, following their first appearance in the Artists of the Night exhibition—bringing his signature wit COMPLEMENTS: Charles Addams & Suzanne Heilmann, a delightfully offbeat and and dark charm back to the gallery walls. The Rye Arts Center is proud to present a visually surprising exhibition that brings together the work of legendary cartoonist Charles Addams and contemporary artist Suzanne Heilmann in an unexpected and enchanting conversation across mediums.

When Kevin Miserocchi, Trustee of the Tee and Charles Addams Foundation, saw the work Heilmann was preparing for an upcoming gallery show, he was struck by its uncanny kinship with Addams’ iconic cartoons. Both artists share a whimsical, mysterious sensibility that—while expressed through vastly different forms—complement each other in surprising and provocative ways.

Working together, Kevin and Suzanne curated a selection of Addams’ cartoons to pair with her existing sculptural works—only two or three of which were created specifically for the exhibition. The rest were already infused with the same off-kilter charm and quiet intrigue that define Addams’ signature style. The resulting exhibition feels like art imitating art—without either artist knowing it.

COMPLEMENTS invites viewers into a world where coincidence and creativity collide. It is witty, provocative, and visually rich—a celebration of two imaginative minds whose works reflect, echo, and elevate one another in unexpected ways.

The Rye Arts Center is honored to host this unique exhibition and invites the public to step into a world where paper meets sculpture, and whimsy meets wonder.
