ArtsWestchester Extends “Give Us the Vote” Exhibition to February 10

Sparked by the 2018 Golden Globes Awards’ emphasis on women’s actions and the power of their voices, ArtsWestchester has announced an extension of its current exhibit, “Give Us the Vote,” to February 10. The exhibit is located at ArtsWestchester’s gallery in the heart of downtown White Plains.

Inspired by the centennial anniversary of the women’s right to vote in New York State, the contemporary exhibition examines the current state of voting rights in America and features new and commissioned works by 20 artists from the local and regional area. According to Janet Langsam, CEO of ArtsWestchester, the sentiments made during the recent award show are exactly why exhibits like “Give Us the Vote” are so relevant.

“Oprah Winfrey pronounced at the award ceremony that ‘a new day is on the horizon,’ with respect to women’s role in the political arena,” Langsam said. “Our exhibit, Give Us the Vote, celebrates the legacy of the suffragists’ and illuminates how the quest for equal access to the voting booth remains a significant issue for all of us.”

The suffragist movement was one of the most powerful grassroots political movements of the 20th century. Women and men from all walks of life rallied together to win women an equal say in the democratic process and full recognition as citizens. The battle for the ballot raged through the Civil Rights Movement leading to the Voting Rights Act of 1965, ensuring that the right to vote would not be denied because of race or color. Many still feel that each election cycle reveals remaining disenfranchised populations and raises controversy about who should, can and does vote.

ArtsWestchester is located at 31 Mamaroneck Avenue in White Plains N.Y.  Admission to the exhibit is free to the public. Docent tours are available to the public and for private groups with a suggested per person donation. ArtsWestchester gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Saturday 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. For more information, visit artsw.org/giveusthevote.
