A Rare Historical Screening of His Glorious Night (1929) and Conversation with Gideon Fountain and Janet Maslin

Bedford, NY – Nearly one hundred years after its release, a film long buried in rumor and studio vaults is returning to the screen — and revealing its surprising connection to one of Hollywood’s most beloved musicals.

On Sunday, November 16 at 12:30 PM, Bedford Playhouse will present a rare restored screening of His Glorious Night (1929), directed by Lionel Barrymore and starring silent film icon John Gilbert. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with Gideon Fountain, grandson of John Gilbert and Leatrice Joy, in conversation with former acclaimed New York Times film critic Janet Maslin.

When M-G-M released His Glorious Night in September 1929, the industry was still adjusting to the transition from silent films to sound. The film’s reception was disastrous—critics and audiences mocked Gilbert’s voice, and the event became legendary as the moment that “killed” the career of one of Hollywood’s great romantic leads. But the story didn’t end there.

Decades later, the infamous “I love you, I love you, I love you” scene from His Glorious Night inspired the comic heart of Singin’ in the Rain—turning one actor’s tragedy into timeless musical satire.

Now, thanks to a new restoration, audiences can finally judge for themselves. Long unseen and once thought lost, His Glorious Night is being reintroduced to audiences nearly a century after it vanished from screens.
