Arts Award Spotlight: Georgette Gouveia

Over the course of several weeks, ArtsNews is highlighting the winners of ArtsWestchester’s Arts Awards, which recognize people and organizations that have had significant impact on the arts and culture in Westchester County. They will be all honored at a luncheon on April 19.

Georgette Gouveia | 2023 President’s Award

For 43 years, writer and editor Georgette Gouveia has covered the arts in Westchester County: first as senior cultural writer with Gannett Inc., then as Editor in Chief of Westfair Communications Inc.’s WAG magazine. Now she is a features editor and senior writer for WAG‘s sister publications Westchester and Fairfield County Business Journals and Wake Up With Westfair.

No one has covered the arts in Westchester as well, or for as long, as she has. In her time reporting on arts and culture, Gouveia has sought to explain the arts to others, particularly for those who have little connection to culture, and convey the arts’ capacity to enlighten, inspire and entertain.

The Glass Door, her short story about love in the time of the coronavirus, was recently published by JMS Books.

She is also the author of a blog and novel series, The Games Men Play, about the power dynamic in culture. Novels include: Burying the Dead, Daimon: A Novel of Alexander the Great, Seamless Sky, Water Music, 2018 Lambda Literary Award finalist The Penalty for Holding, and more.

She is also the winner of both the 2020 YWCA White Plains & Central Westchester Visionary Award and a 2018 Folio Women in Media Award.
