Street Photography: A Community Project
The Capa Space is honored to present The Eyes of The City: Photographs by Richard Sandler, an exhibition opening on March 28.
Between 1977 and 2001, street photographer and documentary filmaker, Richard Sandler documented a New York City in transformation, one not yet mediated by screens, where encounters with strangers were unavoidable and unfiltered. His camera captures the uncomfortable proximities of urban life. Sandler’s work invites us to see ourselves seeing others, and to reckon with what that gaze contains. Understanding begins with witnessing.
The Call
In conjunction with this exhibition, we invite submissions from the community for an exhibition of street photography July 11 – August 2. Selected submissions will be displayed in The Capa Space gallery.
This is your opportunity to add your voice to The Capa Space’s ongoing collective conversation about concerned photography.
Food for Thought
When you search your files for photographs to submit, or use this call to shape your next photographic outing, consider Richard Sandler’s words to Sergio Burns:
“I like to make unposed pictures of people on the street,” Sandler tells me thoughtfully. “Photographs, that ask more questions than they answer. I like to make these semi-enigmatic photographs where there is a storyline in them. I like the pictures that live on the edge between me telling you what’s going on, and you know not knowing. I like photographs that allow YOU to invent the narrative.”
