Untermyer Performing Arts Council Celebrates Our Golden Season

Yonkers:  World War II American Heritage City

6:10 and 6:30 pm Saturday, August 9th

Untermyer Park, 945 North Broadway, Yonkers

Another free program presented by the Untermyer Performing Arts Council!

To continue the celebration of our 50th season, the Untermyer Performing Arts Council is delighted to present Yonkers:  World War II American Heritage City at Untermyer Park, 945 North Broadway, Yonkers.

At 6:10 pm, Mary Robison, Head Reference Librarian at Riverfront Library, will make a special presentation on the Yonkers Home News at 6:10 pm. The Yonkers Home News was a wartime newspaper produced by the Alexander Smith Memorial Fund for Yonkers servicemen and women serving in World War II.  Featuring articles on political, social and sport events, thousands of copies were printed each week and sent to military bases around the world, all paid for ; the paper was designed to keep the twenty thousand Yonkers servicemen and women connected to their hometown. Well over than 25,000 Yonkers Civilians, men, women and children, volunteered for all duties needed, and did everything necessary to “bring our boys back home.”

This and other extraordinary efforts of Yonkers during the war earned our city the designation of New York State’s World War II American Heritage City, the only municipality in New York State to hold this coveted title.

At 6:30 pm, Swingadelic with the Swing Dollz will perform exciting music from the 1940s, music Yonkers loved during World War II, music Yonkers danced to at the USO or listened to on their home radios. Swingadelic will deliver this music from the Yonkers Homefront during the war.

This is our tribute to the men, women and children who devoted their lives to winning World War II, celebrating their sacrifices and lives on the Homefront with a special World War II Concert performed by the acclaimed Swingadelic with the Swing Dollz, their special guests!

Untermyer Performing Arts Council’s performances are free and open to the public; everyone is welcome.  We cannot provide seating at the park, so please bring your chairs or blankets.

In case of rain, this performance will be held at Saunders High School, 183 Palmer Road, Yonkers.  If the weather looks bad, attendees should check our website (www.untermyerperformingarts.org) or call the Untermyer Performing Arts Council’s Arts Line (914-375-3435) after 3 pm the afternoon of the performance to determine where the program will be held.

Our programs are made possible by the City of Yonkers, Arts Westchester with support from Westchester County Government, Senator Andrea Stewart Cousins, Senator Shelley Mayer, Assemblyman Nader Sayegh, Empire City Casino by MGM Resorts and our wonderful supporters.

This definitely is another “don’t miss” golden evening at Untermyer Park!

The Untermyer Performing Arts Council (UPAC) was formed in 1976 to promote the appreciation of the performing arts in Yonkers and beyond. UPAC’s mission was to foster and sponsor performing arts events at the historic Untermyer Park and other venues in Yonkers. UPAC is an all-volunteer, not-for-profit organization that relies on public grants and private donations. To ensure accessibility and welcome the broadest public audience, all UPAC events are free and open to everyone.

In keeping with UPAC’s “WorldFest 2014” theme, this summer’s series includes performances representing nations and regions from around the world including Italy, Latin America, Eastern Europe, and Korea…to name a few. See the full schedule online at www.untermyer.org.

In addition to its popular free summer performance series at Untermyer Park, a new program entitled “UPAC on the Road” was recently launched, with support from Arts Westchester to reach new communities and partner with a variety of neighborhoods, businesses and community organizations.

Now celebrating its 39th year, UPAC continues to grow and seek new ways to serve the residents of Yonkers and the surrounding region. The motto of the Untermyer Performing Arts Council can be summed up with three “E’s”…enlighten, educate and entertain.
