Continuing its tradition of diversely themed concerts, world-class guest conductors and brilliant soloists, the Westchester Symphonic Winds, the county’s premier 60-piece ensemble under the direction of Curt Ebersole, announces its 2016-17 series of concerts at its home in the Tarrytown Music Hall (13 Main Street, Tarrytown, NY).
The first concert on Sunday, November 6 at 3:00 p.m., entitled “Impressions & Memories,” will showcase Pictures at an Exhibition by Modest Mussorgsky. Dr. Bradley Ethington, Director of Bands at Syracuse University, will lead the group in Second Suite in F by Gustave Holst, and euphonium soloist John Palatucci will reprise his July 4th Caramoor performance of The Carnival of Venice. The 15th anniversary of 9/11 will be remembered in Hymn for the Lost and Living, by Eric Ewazen.
On Sunday, January 29 at 3:00 p.m., “Determination and Grit” will be the theme, and the concert will feature soprano Daniella Ashbahian as soloist in Jack Stamp’s Four Maryland Pieces and in Ron Nelson’s Aspen Jubilee. Jeff Ball, conductor of the Brooklyn Wind Symphony will lead the group in On This Bright Morning by David Maslanka. Other pieces include Play by Carl Holmquist and Chorale and Alleluia by Howard Hanson.
The final concert of the regular season on Saturday, May 20 at 8:00 p.m. is all about “Fantastic Passages.” It will feature guest conductor/composer Patrick Burns, leading his own composition I Loved Well Those Cities, narrated by award-winning WQXR broadcaster Robert Sherman. The soloist will be Christopher Creviston, performing William Bolcom’s Concerto for Soprano Saxophone.
In addition to the regular season, Westchester Symphonic Winds has the honor of being the featured ensemble at the annual symposium of the New York State Band Directors Association, scheduled for March 4, 2017 in Syracuse, New York.
Topping off the year, after three sold-out concerts in 2014, 2015 and 2016 Westchester Symphonic Winds has been invited to return on Saturday, July 1 to the beautiful Venetian Theater at Caramoor (149 Girdle Ridge Road, Katonah, New York) for this year’s Fourth of July celebration. Broadway’s Ryan Silverman, baritone, will return as soloist, and the concert, appropriately titled “Pops, Patriots and Fireworks” will feature the iconic 1812 Overture and The Stars and Stripes Forever .
