The Symphony of Westchester 23rd Season Opening Concert


– Pianist Alon Goldstein will open the Symphony of Westchester’s 23rd concert season at Iona College on Sat., Nov. 9, 2019 at 8:00 p.m. in an all-Beethoven program.

 

Goldstein, a frequent performer with the Symphony of Westchester, will play Piano Concerto no. 5, op. 73, in E flat Major.  Also on the program are Coriolan Overture, op. 62 and Symphony no. 5, op. 67 in C minor.

Goldstein, who maintains an extensive world-wide touring schedule, is the Artistic Director for The Distinguished Artists Concert & Lecture Series in Santa Cruz, CA, and is also the Artistic Director of the Mt. Angel Abbey Bach Festival in Oregon. He created the Emerald Coast Music Alliance in Florida, which brings classical music to under-served communities.

 

The Symphony’s concert season at Iona College will continue on Sun., Dec. 15 at 3:00 p.m., when concertmaster Alex Abayev and violinist Tetyana Byelgorodska will perform Bach’s Double Violin Concerto BWV 1043 in D minor as part of an all-Baroque program which also includes Brandenburg Concerto no. 3, BMV 1048 in G major. Pachabel’s Canon and Handel’s Concerto Grosso, op. 6 no. 1 are also on the program.

 

In addition to being the Symphony’s concertmaster, Abayev performs as a soloist and chamber musician in the United States and abroad and participates in many international music festivals.  Byelgorodska is a former concertmaster of the Symphony Orchestra of the National Philharmonic of Ukraine who has toured extensively throughout Europe, Japan and South Korea.

 

Sunday, Feb. 9, 2020 at 3:00 p.m. will be the Symphony’s annual Young Artist Showcase featuring winners of the sixth annual concerto competition and compositions written by students in the Composers of the Future program run in collaboration with New Rochelle’s Songcatchers. Ticket prices for this concert only are $20 for all adults and $10 for all students.

 

The Symphony’s season concludes on Sat., May 9, 2020  at 8:00 p.m. with an all-Romantic program featuring YooJin Jang performing Max Bruch’s Violin Concerto no. 1, op.26 in G minor. This program also includes Johannes Brahms’ Hungarian Dances, nos. 5 and 6 and Edward Elgar’s Enigma Variations, op. 36.

 

Jang has performed in the U.S. with the symphony orchestras of Chautauqua, Dubuque, Roswell, Columbus and University of Chicago. Internationally, she has performed in Korea, Budapest, Spain and Japan.
