On Wednesday evening April 29 at 7 PM, The Sanctuary Series will join with South Salem Presbyterian Church (New York) to present a special concert of hymns performed on the pipe organ in the Sanctuary of the Church. The concert is being presented as a tribute to the medical personnel and other essential workers who sacrifice each day for us on the front lines of the current COVID-19 crisis and to offer a moment of respite and reflection for the community. The event which will be closed to the public will be webcast on the Series Facebook page: www.Facebook.com/thesanctuaryseries (@theSanctuarySeries).
Now in its seventh year, The Sanctuary Series is known for presenting extraordinary keyboard performances in the heart of the historic South Salem hamlet. The current crisis has already caused the postponement of concerts featuring pianists Simone Dinnerstein and Dominic Cheli. Performing in Wednesday’s virtual concert will be Mary Jane Newman, artistic director of the Series who is music director and organist at the South Salem church, along with her husband, Anthony Newman who is organist and music director at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church in neighboring Bedford. Mrs. Newman, an ordained Rabbi, also serves as director of music at Temple Shaaray Tefila in Bedford and as a chaplain at Greenwich Hospital (CT).
Labeled the “High Priest of Bach” by Wynton Marsalis, Anthony Newman, is an internationally renowned organist and considered by many to be America’s leading Bach specialist His wife, Sanctuary Series Artistic Director, Mary Jane Newman, herself an acclaimed pianist and organist, has appeared as soloist and conductor with orchestras, chamber ensembles and vocal groups throughout Europe, the U.S. and Israel.
The concert will be performed on the Church’s Russell & Co. pipe organ which the couple helped to design. Questions or comments may be directed to [email protected].
