THE PICTURE HOUSE FILM CLUB WITH MARSHALL FINE TO LAUNCH IN OCTOBER

The Picture House announced today the launch of The Picture House Film Club with Marshall Fine. Fine, a long-time New York film critic and Westchester resident, has also been named The Picture House critic-in-residence, effective June 1. The Picture House Film Club will offer six-film screenings in each of three series—fall, winter, and spring —with the first screening scheduled for Wednesday, October 1, 2014.

The Picture House Film Club’s six-film series will show films prior to their release, with Fine moderating post-screening discussions with stars, directors, producers, and other industry insiders. The cost for each six-film series will be $120 per person. Tickets will go on sale for The Picture House members from June 2 through June 13 and tickets for the general public will go on-sale on June 14. Tickets will be available for the entire six-film series and will not be available on an individual basis.

Fine will also serve as in-house moderator for other exclusive film programs each month and will curate additional film series throughout the year. He will also contribute to The Picture House website (www.thepicturehouse.org), reporting from film festivals around the world, and to other new media forms for the iconic 1921 movie theater.

“I’m excited about the possibilities offered by working with The Picture House,” said Fine, who produced and hosted a sold-out film club at the Emelin Theater in Mamaroneck from 2005 to 2014. “I’ve had a great time with the Emelin; everyone there has been very good to me. But this opportunity allows me to explore film curating on a broader scale. I hope to help bring wider recognition to The Picture House as the Westchester destination for independent, nonfiction and international film.”

“We are thrilled to welcome Marshall to The Picture House community,” said John Calvelli, Chair of the Board of Directors of The Picture House. “With Marshall as Critic-in-Residence and the launch of The Picture House Film Club, we’re demonstrating our dedication to providing a shared community experience through film to diverse audiences in Southern Westchester, the Bronx, and beyond. Marshall’s vast experience in the film industry is going to help The Picture House continue to grow and expand in the coming years.”

Fine also curates the Thalia Film Club at Symphony Space in Manhattan. He has served as guest host and moderator for screenings at Film Society of Lincoln Center, the Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of the Moving Image, BAM Cinematheque, and the New York branch of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences. In Westchester, he  created and produced The Journal-News Film Club at the Jacob Burns Film Center in Pleasantville, NY, when it opened in 2001.

Among the guests who have appeared at various films he has presented are: Stanley Tucci (Blind Date, The Lovely Bones), Kevin Costner (Mr. Brooks), Will Forte (Nebraska), Pedro Almodovar and Penelope Cruz (Volver), Alex Gibney (Taxi to the Dark Side), Ed Helms and Mark Duplass (Jeff, Who Lives at Home), Melissa Leo (Frozen River), Griffin Dunne (The Discoverers), and Vera Farmiga (Up in the Air). Some of the films that film club members have seen before the general public are: The Lunchbox, The Grand Budapest Hotel, 127 Hours, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, Bully, The King’s Speech, The Descendants, City Island, The Departed.

Marshall Fine was long-time film critic for The Journal-News and national film correspondent for Gannett News Service. A three-time-chairman of the New York Film Critics Circle, he is a freelance writer who serves as film/TV critic for Star magazine and as contributing editor to Cigar Aficionado magazine, where he writes cover stories. He also writes about film on a regular basis for his own website, Hollywood & Fine (hollywoodandfine.com), and posts regularly on Huffington Post. The author of biographies of directors Sam Peckinpah and John Cassavetes, he also directed a documentary about film critic Rex Reed. He currently is at work on a documentary about comedian Robert Klein.
