Untermyer Performing Arts Council’s World Fest 2019

Presents

Taikoza

Japanese Drums and Dancers

7:30 pm Saturday, August 24th 2019 at Untermyer Park

945 North Broadway, Yonkers

The Untermyer Performing Arts Council is delighted to welcome Taikoza to Yonkers!  They will perform 7:30 pm, Saturday, August 24th at Untermyer Park, 945 North Broadway in Yonkers.

Taikoza will bring the experience of the thunderous rhythms of the ancestral Japanese Taiko Big Drum and the magical sounds of the bamboo flutes! Powerful rhythms, electrifying, room-thumping energy, colorful traditional costumes and dynamic motion, combined with Japan’s rich tradition of music and presentation, will create a highly visual performance, one guaranteed to please everyone.

Taiko means big drums, exactly what Taikoza brings– big drums, powerful rhythms, and electrifying energy. Drawing from Japan’s rich tradition of music and performance, Taikoza has created a new sound using a variety of traditional instruments. In addition to drums of assorted sizes, Taikoza incorporates the Shakuhachi and the Fue, both bamboo flutes.

Taikoza was formed in New York City by members of Ondekoza , the group that started the renaissance of Taiko in Japan in the 1960s and then introduced Taiko to the world.  Not only have they toured internationally, they have appeared on ESPN, NBC, the History Channel and at the SUMO tournament at Madison Square Garden.

This celebration of international music will be another “don’t miss” Untermyer Performing Arts Council program under the stars!

Untermyer Performing Arts Council presents free performances and events every summer Saturday evening on the Great Lawn at Untermyer Park.   The Untermyer Performing Arts Council itself is an all-volunteer group that brings diverse, professional programs to the people of Yonkers, Westchester and beyond.

This program, done in cooperation with Mayor Mike Spano and the Yonkers Department of Parks, Recreation and Conservation, was made possible by ArtsWestchester with support from the Westchester County Government and the City of Yonkers.  Senator Andrea Stewart Cousins, Senator Shelley Mayer and our many generous supporters provided additional support for this program.

P.O. Box 49 Yonkers, NY 10702 (914) 375-3435

The Untermyer Performing Arts Council (UPAC) was formed in 1976 to promote the appreciation of the performing arts in Yonkers and beyond. UPAC’s mission was to foster and sponsor performing arts events at the historic Untermyer Park and other venues in Yonkers. UPAC is an all-volunteer, not-for-profit organization that relies on public grants and private donations. To ensure accessibility and welcome the broadest public audience, all UPAC events are free and open to everyone.

In keeping with UPAC’s “WorldFest 2014” theme, this summer’s series includes performances representing nations and regions from around the world including Italy, Latin America, Eastern Europe, and Korea…to name a few. See the full schedule online at www.untermyer.org.

In addition to its popular free summer performance series at Untermyer Park, a new program entitled “UPAC on the Road” was recently launched, with support from Arts Westchester to reach new communities and partner with a variety of neighborhoods, businesses and community organizations.

Now celebrating its 39th year, UPAC continues to grow and seek new ways to serve the residents of Yonkers and the surrounding region. The motto of the Untermyer Performing Arts Council can be summed up with three “E’s”…enlighten, educate and entertain.
