Untermyer Performing Arts Council’s World Fest 2019

Presents

Sidiki Conde & Toukounou

7:30 pm Saturday, August 31st 2019 at Untermyer Park

945 North Broadway, Yonkers

The Untermyer Performing Arts Council is delighted to welcome Sidiki Conde and Toukounou back to Untermyer! They will perform 7:30 pm, Saturday, August 31st at Untermyer Park, 945 North Broadway in Yonkers.

Although paralyzed from polio at the age of fourteen, Sidiki Conde was determined to overcome his handicap.  Sent to live with his grandfather in a village deep in the forest, he managed to build his upper body strength and learned to walk on his hands.  During the ceremony in which young men his age dance time-honored steps into manhood, Conde struggled to reconstruct the traditional steps by dancing on his hands instead of his feet. His performance was met with rousing applause and acclamation!

He went on to be not only a renowned dancer, but also an advocate for changing the perception of people of disabilities. Today Conde continues to emphasize dance comes from the heart, transcending any disability.

This celebration of international music—and the joy of life—definitely is another “don’t miss” Untermyer Performing Arts Council program under the stars!

Arts Council program under the stars!

The Untermyer Performing Arts Council will present free performances and events for our World Fest 2019 series every summer Saturday evening through September 7th on the Great Lawn at Untermyer Park.   The Untermyer Performing Arts Council itself is an all-volunteer group that brings diverse, professional programs to the people of Yonkers, Westchester and beyond.

This program, done in cooperation with Mayor Mike Spano and the Yonkers Department of Parks, Recreation and Conservation, was made possible by ArtsWestchester with support from the Westchester County Government and the City of Yonkers.  The Empire City Casino, Senator Andrea Stewart Cousins, Senator Shelley Mayer and our many generous supporters provided additional support for this program.

P.O. Box 49 Yonkers, NY 10702 (914) 375-3435

The Untermyer Performing Arts Council (UPAC) was formed in 1976 to promote the appreciation of the performing arts in Yonkers and beyond. UPAC’s mission was to foster and sponsor performing arts events at the historic Untermyer Park and other venues in Yonkers. UPAC is an all-volunteer, not-for-profit organization that relies on public grants and private donations. To ensure accessibility and welcome the broadest public audience, all UPAC events are free and open to everyone.

In keeping with UPAC’s “WorldFest 2014” theme, this summer’s series includes performances representing nations and regions from around the world including Italy, Latin America, Eastern Europe, and Korea…to name a few. See the full schedule online at www.untermyer.org.

In addition to its popular free summer performance series at Untermyer Park, a new program entitled “UPAC on the Road” was recently launched, with support from Arts Westchester to reach new communities and partner with a variety of neighborhoods, businesses and community organizations.

Now celebrating its 39th year, UPAC continues to grow and seek new ways to serve the residents of Yonkers and the surrounding region. The motto of the Untermyer Performing Arts Council can be summed up with three “E’s”…enlighten, educate and entertain.
