Artist Statement

Art is my way of experiencing life. I've been painting and dancing, gardening, sewing and refinishing furniture because I see what can be beautiful, awe-inspiring and seductive in everyday moments. Whether happy, sad, remorseful or angry, I have continued to create -- something! I can't survive without engaging in creativity. My mother was a professional illustrator and watercolorist. My father was Edward Augustiny, a successful illustrator in the 1950's and 1960's in Chicago until his tragic death in April of 1970. Artwork has been said to express the artist's own emotions and producing artwork wasn't easy for me after my dad choked to death at our dinner table. My elder brother was born with cerebral palsy and institutionalized when I was 4 years old. Finding my creative footing hasn't been easy. But I am determined to not only survive but to survive and flourish! You might see that my artwork reflects everything that I experience as life-affirming! I paint whatever captures my visual attention: homes, beaches, food, people. Creative work enables my healthy and productive life.
