Artist Statement

Hope Friedland is a native New Yorker. For her undergraduate degree she majored in ceramics and art education and was selected to Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities.  She attended Columbia University for her masters degree and after graduation, she studied oil painting in Florence, Italy. As an award winning watercolorist, Hope's paintings capture the essence of florals, landscapes, animals and people.  Her style of painting is Impressionistic. She uses the Wet into Wet watercolor technique. Hope is a member of many art organizations including Kappa Pi National Art Honorary, the Northern Westchester Watercolor Society (President), and the Scarsdale Art Association.  She exhibits her watercolors in New York galleries, juried shows, solo and group exhibitions.  In addition, Hope is a NY State certified art teacher and was the recipient of The Gorfinkle-Excellence in Teaching Award.  Many kids know her as the Art Lady when she teaches children in the Westchester Library System or on local cable T.V.  Her articles on elementary art education appear in national magazines and periodicals and she is the owner, creator and designer of People Plaques. The New York Times cited these unique and whimsical porcelain collages as special gifts for special people on their special occasions.   Hope teaches creative watercolors for Cunard, Crystal and Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines. Recently she completed a commission to paint the Jeffries Point Lighthouse for the Collins family.   Three generations of this family maintained the famous lite, also known as "The Little Red Lighthouse",under the George Washinton Bridge.  She is a watercolor instructor for Larchmont/Mamaroneck Center for Continuing Education as well as Scarsdale Adult Education.  In addition she teaches a course in Collage. Many of her colorful paintings appear on the covers of local course catalogs. Hope lives in White Plains, New York where she leads a group of women painters who paint once a week during the year.
