Artist Statement

Hi.  I’m Debra Whitman, a professional musician, teacher and author.  I have created an exciting music appreciation program that is currently being taught throughout Westchester County.  Because of this unique music program, I have recently earned the distinction as a select ArtsWestchester teaching artist.  I am also active as a piano teacher, maintaining a private studio in Larchmont, NY and perform as a professional harpist throughout the New York Metropolitan area.  For more information and videos, please visit me at  Thanks for your interest.

Educational Background

Manhattan School of Music, NY, pre-college division, piano/harp concentration, 1985-1987. BFA, Music Conservatory at Purchase College, NY, major in Harp Performance, minor in Piano Performance, graduated cum laude, 1987-1991. Study Harp with Susan Jolles, 1988-present. Fluent in piano, harp and alto saxophone.

Teaching Artist Experience

2011-present: Instructor, early childhood Classical Kids Music programs. Piano instructor. Professional Harpist 2010: copyrighted and self-published “Composer Celebration, A Music Appreciation Coloring Book.” 2008-present: Classical Kids Music, various programs. 1992-present: private piano teacher to 45 students, weekly lessons, grades K-12. 1989-present: special events harpist, solo and chamber music performances, Westchester County and New York metropolitan area. Mar 2014, Nov 2012: presented one-day workshops about instruments and famous composers, "Music of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons," ages 3 and up, and "Music of John Philip Sousa," all ages, Larchmont Public Library, Larchmont, NY. 2005-2008: Classical Kids Music weekly program, grades Pre K-2, Liberty Montessori School, Mamaroneck and New Rochelle, NY. 2001-2002: lunchtime music enrichment program, grades K-5, Harrison Avenue Elementary School, Harrison, NY. 1999-2002: Playtime Music classes, East Avenue Language Studio, Larchmont, NY. 1997: recorded and produced CD “Debra Whitman Performs Straight from the Harp.”
