Artist Statement

After receiving a Master of Fine Arts Degree from the School of American Craftsman at Rochester Institute of Technology, Mr. Gelfand spent a number of years as an independent artisan. His long-term interest in tapestry and sculpture led him to an exploration of traditional textile techniques using contemporary synthetic materials, in the creation of three-dimensional wall hangings, soft-sculptures and free-standing forms. The advent of new computer-based design technologies, first deployed in his early textile works, prompted him to turn his attention to the potential of software morphing technologies in the creation of both figurative and abstract visual designs. His current work utilizes digital filtering and manipulation methods to create dual perspective ½ 2D images that rely solely upon the imagination of the perceiving eye. Mr. Gelfand is an award winning textile and graphic arts designer who has had one man and group shows throughout the North East. He has served on the faculty of a number of universities and private art schools in New York, Massachusetts and New Hampshire and as Director of the Arts Resource Center in Newburyport, Massachusetts.
