Writing for Social Change: Re-Dream a Just World

What’s at stake, in the writer’s struggle for truth and beauty? Writing for Social Change: Re-Dream a Just World offers deep ways to work creatively with our craft. In this one-day intensive, and in the context of what is at stake for each participant in their writing, I will share some of the key elements of a series of writing for social change workshops that I’ve taught in many settings all over the country. The course reframes and recontextualizes the craft, concepts, and issues of creative writing across the genres—whether poetry or prose, fiction or nonfiction, drama or comedy—to open vital space for your voice, language, story, and imagination, within a setting of supportive community. We’ll work with some of the most powerful concepts of each section of the larger workshop—Re-Dream a Just World; Place and Exile/Borders and Crossings; and, Yearning and Justice: Writing the Unlived Life—to create new writing from some of your deepest concerns, and send you home with food for thought, a liberated voice, and suggestions for writing explorations in a terrain expanded to include more of the world you care about.
