Lecture: “Traditional Ceramics References in Contemporary Works” – Michelle Erickson

‘World Class Maker’ Michelle Erickson has advanced the rediscovery of colonial era ceramic techniques to a unique art form connecting the legacy of pottery making to 21st century issues of globalization, social injustice, and environmental geopolitics. Michelle will demonstrate her diverse practice in lost ceramic techniques of slipware, delftware, agate, porcelain and jasperware drawing parallels between18th century Staffordshire salt glaze patterns and Nike Olympic trainers, Josiah Wedgwood’s 1783 abolitionist medallion and modern protests to child slavery and gun violence, and an enlightenment obsession with the science of fossils to our perilous full throttle addiction to fossil fuel.
