2015 Jazz Fest-Women of the Piedmont Blues


A memorable evening that unites some of the key practitioners of the acoustic blues on the East Coast, Presented by the ArtsW Folk Arts Program in cooperation with thecountryblues.com

FEATURING:

Eleanor Ellis: Widely considered to be among the best practitioners of the acoustic blues worldwide, the native of Louisiana and longtime Washington, DC resident performs at clubs, festivals and concerts in the United States, Canada and Europe.

Jackie Merritt: An accomplished multitalented and multitalented visual artist and musician, deeply influenced by Elizabeth Cotten. She plays harmonica, guitar, bass and she taps bones (a percussion technique when bones or spoons are clapped).

Resa Gibbs: A vocalist and percussionist known for her passionate, warm and soulful singing deeply rooted in spirituals and gospel music. She also emerged out of the famed Archie’s barbershop music scene in Washington, D.C. and today ranks among the great voices in the traditional blues.

Valerie Turner: A native New Yorker from Queens with southern roots, who has emerged as one of the important women in the acoustic traditional blues today. Her refined finger style Piedmont blues, the east coast style acoustic country blues, continues the tradition of the late great Elizabeth Cotton and Etta Baker.

Poet Gold: A rare original talent who grabs you by the heart and says “Recognize” – Poet, author, performer, songwriter, community “Artivist” and speaker, Bettina “Poet Gold” Wilkerson is pushing the boundaries of poetry and the spoken word.
