Weekend Discovery Concert – 28th Anniversary Concerto Concert – Pianists Chelsea Wang and Larry Weng, with the Downtown Sinfonietta, Vincent Liontii, Conductor

Downtown Music continues its collaboration with the young prize winners of the New York International Piano Competition.  Chelsea Wang and Larry Weng play a program featuring the Beethoven Concerto No. 2 in B flat Major, Opus 19 and the Mozart Concerto No. 17 in G Major, K. 453.  They will be accompanied by Downtown Sinfonietta, which features members of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra.

Chelsea Wang was awarded Second Prize at the 2012 Sixth New York International Piano Competition, a biennial event presented under the auspices of The Stecher and Horowitz Foundation. In addition to her cash prize, she appears on the Foundation’s Young Artists Series, a program of concerts throughout New York, Connecticut, and Washington D.C.  A native of Des Moines, Iowa, Ms. Wang has garnered national and international awards including Best Interpretation of a Bach Work at the 2010 Eastman Young Artist International Piano Competition and Best Interpretation of a Work by Franz Liszt at the 2009 Liszt-Garrison International Piano Competition.

Larry Weng is a laureate of the Boston Symphony Orchestra’s Concerto Competition, the Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition for Young Musicians, The New York International Piano Competition, and the Kosciuzsko Foundation Chopin Competition.  Cited by the New York Times for his “steely power and incisive rhythm”, Mr. Weng has been described as “an extremely sensitive musician and mature interpreter” by the New York Concert Review.
