The Sanctuary Series presents The Goldbergs with Anthony Newman

The Sanctuary Series, presenting some of the world’s most accomplished pianists in the pastoral setting of northern Westchester’s historic Hamlet of South Salem, continues the spring portion of its 2014-2015 season on Sunday afternoon, April 19, with Anthony Newman performing a program entitled, “The Goldbergs.”

Described by Wynton Marsalis as “The High Priest of Bach” and by Time Magazine as “The High Priest of the Harpsichord,” conductor, composer and keyboardist Anthony Newman, is considered America’s leading Bach specialist. In this program Newman performs one of Bach’s most celebrated works: the “Goldberg Variations.” Originally written for the harpsichord, he perform  the “Goldbergs” in his own piano arrangement, highlighting the expressive capabilities of the instrument. In addition to the “Goldbergs” Newman will perform Bach’s beloved “Chromatic Fantasy & Fugue in D minor,” as well as selections on the Sanctuary’s extraordinary Russell & Co. pipe organ.

The season concludes on Sunday, May 10 with a program featuring internationally renowned Steinway artist Jeffrey Biegel presenting “The Romantic Virtuoso,” works by Beethoven, Liszt and Chopin.

All concerts are on Sunday at 3 pm and are immediately followed by a artists wine and cheese reception at the Church courtesy of the Horse & Hound Inn, which is just across the street from the Sanctuary in the heart of the historic Hamlet.
