Program:

Mozart: Overture to The Marriage of Figaro
Golijov: Three Songs
Mendelssohn: Octet for orchestra
Transcribed for full orchestra by Yoon Jae Lee

Multiple-Grammy winner, McArthur “genius” and Mount Vernon resident Dawn Upshaw is sought out almost exclusively by composers for her consummate artistry and astonishingly beautiful renderings of their work. Osvaldo Golijov, of Romanian descent by way of Argentina, Israel, and now the U.S., composed his hauntingly lyrical “Three Songs” for Ms. Upshaw, setting them to texts by Sally Potter, Rosalia de Castro, and Emily Dickinson, and which opens with a traditional Yiddish lullaby.

Maestro Ted Sperling‘s “Friends & Family” guided tour concert (kids 17 and under admitted free with an adult purchase) includes the iconic themes of Mozart’s Figaro Overture and a full orchestra arrangement of Mendelssohn’s beloved Octet.

Instrument Petting Zoo at 2 pm

Before the concert children are invited to get up close and personal with the instruments at a free Instrument Petting Zoo in the lobby. Musicians from the Phil will be on hand in the lobby to guide young listeners as they explore violins, cellos, trumpets and more.

Special thanks to Ardsley Musical Instrument Service for providing the string instruments.

Concert tickets for young people 17 and under are FREE with adult purchase. Advance reservations are required, please call (914) 682-3707.
