The “I’m Tired” Project COMES TO NY!

Emerging artists Paula Akpan and Harriet Evans came to Peekskill for a week-long residency at the Hudson Valley Center for Contemporary Art (HVCCA) from Feb. 20-27.

The “I’m Tired” Project highlights the lasting impact of everyday micro-aggressions, assumptions & stereotypes. To make a more lasting impact, photography is fused with written word. Each person partaking in the project crafted a statement that was then written on their back beginning with the words ‘I’m tired of’… This statement addresses absolutely any kind of discrimination that the individual either experienced themselves or had witnessed around them and felt passionate about.

The series deals with stereotypes of different identities including race, gender, sexuality and body image.

“When we are able to relate to a picture on a deeply personal level, it brings about almost a feeling of camaraderie because there is someone out there who understands exactly how you feel and has been able to articulate in a way that hopefully informs many others,” co-creator of the project Paula Akpan told The Huffington Post.

“By writing the phrases on people’s backs, the project offers both anonymity and the possibility for empathy.” -Alison Lynch for Metro.co.uk

These London based artists invited New Yorkers to participate in the project by attending a photo shoot. The resulting photos are hung in HVCCA’s mezzanine Gallery as part of WORD.
