The History and Origins of Carnevale

The evening will open with a reception featuring some of the traditional regional desserts.  Professor Spedaliere’s lecture will immediately follow. The origins of Carnevale are ancient and date back to the Paleolithic Era. After the course of millennia, the practice evolved into somewhat of a religious celebration; however, the celebrated gods happen to be Bacchus and Saturn, respectively the Roman gods of wine and reversed fortune. With the advent of Christianity in the Roman world, Carnevale lost just a bit of its riotous, ritualistic character, and it became an annual form of popular entertainment designed as one last festive fling before the 40 days of Lent. Over time, Italians raised the ancient festival traditions to greater artistic standards. The elaborate costumes, the piquant poetry, theatrical works and the masked balls show that Carnevale is as strong as ever. Who doesn’t love a party in which ogni scherzo vale?
