TACONIC OPERA PRESENTS THE WORLD PREMIERE OF NEW ORATORIO – JOB

Currently in its 18th season and past recipient of the Westchester County Arts Organization of the Year Award, Taconic Opera will be performing the world premiere performance of the oratorio Job. Composed by the company’s General and Artistic Director, author and composer, Dan Montez, it is based on the prophet in the biblical Book of Job. The performance will feature a full orchestra, professional soloists, and the chorus of the Taconic Opera, and it will be conducted by the composer himself. The work will be one of the featured entries in ArtsWestchester’s ArtSee Festival of 50 new art works in 2016. You won’t want to miss this extraordinary event.

Why Job? Tennyson called Job “the greatest poem, whether of ancient or modern literature.” Victor Hugo remarked, “Tomorrow, if all literature was to be destroyed and it was left to me to retain one work only, I should save Job.” Says Montez, “Job isn’t a book about the reasons for suffering. It has a much deeper and more important narrative. Job is about how we deal with injustice, especially from those we should have trusted the most. It is about wanting the best for our perceived enemies.”

When asked about his compositional style, Montez says, “I’m highly influenced by French composers like Poulenc, Ravel and Fauré, but you can’t get the opera out of me. I want to tell a story and write something moving and beautiful rather than something experimental.” Comments sent to Taconic opera regarding Montez’s previous oratorios include, “Breathtaking!”, “I am in awe!”, “Sweeping harmonic and melodic gestures!”, “Glorious!”, “Words cannot express the joy I felt.”, and “An unmatched experience for me.” In other words, the work is highly accessible.

The company will be presenting performances of the oratorio in two locations: Saturday, March 19, 2016, at 7:30 pm at the Ossining United Methodist Church, 1 Emwilton Place/corner of Route 9, Ossining, NY; and Sunday, March 20, 2016, at 3:00 pm at the White Plains Presbyterian Church, 39 North Broadway, White Plains, NY.
