Taconic Opera offers unique tragi-comedy double bill: Pagliacci and Trial by Jury

Taconic Opera is excited to announce that it will open its 18th season with a two-opera event that is sure to please opera lovers over a wide spectrum of tastes. Pagliacci, a dramatic opera by Ruggero Leoncavallo, is one of the most recognizable and beloved operas in history. Trial by Jury, by Gilbert and Sullivan, is an outrageous comedy with distinctively British wit and charm. Audiences will probably never again be given the opportunity to see such vastly different yet complementary works presented together in one program. One will bring you to tears, the other will make you cry laughing, and both are about the not-so-nice side of marriage.

Pagliacci was and continues to be an audience favorite, and it contains the universally recognizable and heartbreaking tenor aria, Vesti la giubba. This tale within a tale recounts a love triangle among street circus clowns which ends horribly as a result of betrayal and jealousy. The circus-goers come to see a comedic fictitious play, and what they witness is an actual tragedy unfolding before their eyes. Leoncavallo’s music is exquisite and has enormous appeal. Pagliacci will be performed in Italian with English supertitles.

For the second part of the program, and for the first time in its history, Taconic Opera is presenting an operetta by W.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan, the famous British librettist-composer duo. The company will be premiering their famous one-act opera, Trial by Jury, the perfect antidote to Pagliacci. Also about marital difficulties – a woman bringing her fiance to court for not marrying her  (breach of contract) – this story pokes fun at the hypocrisy and arrogance of the social elite and people in power. Taconic Opera’s updated version will remind you of a combination of Judge Judy and Jerry Springer with hilarious results. Trail by Jury will be performed in English.

Two performances only of this double-bill will be held at the Yorktown Stage, 1974 Commerce St., Yorktown Heights, NY on Saturday, October 17 at 8:00 pm and Sunday, October 18 at 2:00 pm. A wide range of ticket prices are available and significant reductions are offered for seniors. To encourage youth attendance, student prices are only $15 regardless of seating selection.
