STEAM / Engineering Academy

The Rye Arts Center embraces the many practical applications of art and design, and is dedicated to integrating the arts into the STEM curriculum.

This summer The Rye Arts Center will launch new programs in Middle School Robotics and High School Engineering! Led by Middle School Engineering teacher, Sal Curella, these classes will engage students in fun and educational hands-on projects.

5 Saturdays
(June 27, July 11, 18, 25, August 1)
Fee: $150 (members receive discount)

Grades 5-8:
Robotics using VEX I.Q. with Sal Curella
10:00 am -12:00 pm
This class offers students the opportunity to develop and use engineering tools, materials, methods, and skills in an effort to design and build a creative solution to real and challenging problems.

Students are given a chance to do what engineers do: turn ideas into robust working machines by coupling hard work with basic science and mathematical skills and concepts. Students will develop and demonstrate creative engineering skills and talents in a fun and exciting group atmosphere.

Please bring a notebook. All other supplies included.

Course Units
Unit 1: Introduction to Robotics and Engineering
Unit 2: Tool and Lab Safety
Unit 3: Building a Drivetrain and Chassis
Unit 4: Incorporation of a Pneumatic System
Unit 5: Wiring Circuits

Grades 9-12:
Engineering using Inventor with Sal Curella
12:00 -2:00 pm
Using industry standard 3D modeling software (Autodesk Inventor) and a hands-on approach to solving problems, students will use 3D modeling software, 3D printers, 3D scanners, laser cutters, and various other tools to bring their ideas to prototype and then, ultimately, to life.

Required materials: students must bring a Windows PC laptop to class (A limited number of laptops are available for use on a first-come, first-served basis. Please let us know if you need one, at time of registration).

Course Units
Unit 1: Introduction to Autodesk Inventor Software
Unit 2: Using Modeling Skills in Design
Unit 3: Engineering & Design Documentation
Unit 4: Advanced 3-D Modeling and Final Project
