Shoot the Piano Player

There were many films that Jonathan Demme never quite got to in his Rarely Seen universe, and we’re going to joyfully continue to bring those titles forth, and invite each other to ‘fertilize the air with our thoughts’ afterwards. When Jonathan met with Paul Holdengraber at the JBFC in 2015, he talked exuberantly about the profound influence that Shoot the Piano Player had on his career when he saw it in 1960. Join us for a screening of this film at his favorite 5:00 Sunday screening time, and beforehand we’ll share a few moments of this conversation with Paul Holdengraber.

François Truffaut is drunk on the possibilities of cinema in this, his most playful film. Part thriller, part comedy, part tragedy, Shoot the Piano Player relates the adventures of mild-mannered piano player Charlie (Charles Aznavour, in a triumph of hangdog deadpan) as he stumbles into the criminal underworld and a whirlwind love affair. Loaded with gags, guns, clowns, and thugs, this razor-sharp homage to the American gangster film is pure nouvelle vague.
