Sheep-to-Shawl

Fr

Celebrate spring! From fiber to fashion, this classic spring festival celebrates all things wooly sheep! Visitors are invited to explore each step in the process of turning wool into cloth using 18th-century techniques.

Hands-on activities include dyeing wool and weaving, and crafts for children, including sewing with wool and creating a picture from sheep or alpaca wool (NEW!).

Outside on the grounds, Scottish border collies display their skills at sheep- and duck-herding. Visitors are invited to enjoy a fashion show complete with critiques from Historic Hudson Valley’s own expert costume designer. Master storyteller Jonathan Kruk entertains with some lively tales.

NEW! This year we welcome beautiful, friendly alpacas from Faraway Farm in Yorktown Heights. Like sheep, alpacas’ furry coats are shorn in the spring and the fleece is washed, carded, and spun into a soft yarn.

In the Visitor Center, discover the exhibit Wearable Wealth: The Value of Cloth and Clothing in the 18th Century.

Guest vendors include Flying Fingers, artistic needlework by Martha North, Spin City, and Faraway Farm.

For visitors who work up an appetite, Geordane’s serves fresh, tasty options.

And don’t forget to visit our Museum Shop in the Visitor Center, which is filled with fun spring items as well as Hudson Valley-centric merchandise.

Outside on the grounds, agile Scottish border collies will demonstrate not only their sheep herding savvy, but their ability to corral ducks. And of course, sheep ready to lose their winter coats will be shorn by hand just like they were in the 18th century while costumed interpreters demonstrate wool dyeing, spinning, and weaving, and lead special hands-on activities for children.

Sheep-to-Shawl visitors can see the entire process of making woolen cloth and participate in many stages of the process: picking and carding the wool, spinning and dyeing the yarn, and weaving it into cloth. Interpreters, wearing costume of the 18th century, also demonstrate the labor-intensive process of making linen from the flax plant. Storyteller Jonathan Kruk will be on hand to share lively tales.
